There are many questions asked by parents and carers who think that their child is presenting with a condition such as Sensory Processing Disorder. This section of the website aims to give you a clearer insight into what occupational therapy is and how Future Steps Consultancy utilises sensory and motor intervention to provide children with effective treatment.
Occupational Therapy is the use of practical and activity based treatment to develop, maintain or recover the skills necessary for daily living, working with parents and carers to help children with difficulties such as Sensory Processing Disorder.
• Bike Riding (balance)
• PE (i.e. dancing and sports, such as football)
• Using cutlery
Sensory Processing Disorder refers to a difficulty in processing sensory information. Please understand that we all have difficulty processing certain sensory stimuli (a certain touch, smell, taste, sound, movement etc.) and we all have sensory preferences. It only becomes a sensory processing disorder when we are on extreme ends of the continuum or experience “disruptive, unpredictable fluctuations which significantly impact our developmental skills or everyday functioning."
The Motor System is the part of the nervous system that is involved with movement. If a child has problems of any kind, within this area, then it is likely that their movement will be affected.
The Sensory System is the area of the nervous system which is concerned with processing sensory information, i.e. understanding what we are seeing (vision), hearing (auditory), tasting (gustatory), balance/movement (vestibular) and touching (somatic sensation).
Future Steps offers intensive packages which allows for sensory integration, gross and fine motor skills, handwriting and perception to all be developed. During treatment, parents and carers can receive programmes to be followed upon within the home environment to ensure intervention is highly effective.
Training is offered to ensure that parents and carers can support the child and their treatment effectively. Along with parent training, Future Steps offers school and home programme training to continue the support and development of the child.
If your child has been diagnosed with sensory processing disorder (SPD), ADHD, Dyspraxia, Dyslexia, Autism, DCD or presents with any of the difficulties above please fill out our contact form, call us on 01325 254688 or email us at email@example.com
Amazing service staff were excellent! Loved the fact that I could watch the assessment from outside of the room.
