Understanding children and their behaviours can be difficult at the best of times but when a child has a condition like Sensory Processing Disorder it can be even more challenging, but we are here to help. Future Steps will be holding a Sensory Workshop for all parents, carers and educational professionals who have had previous involvement with Future Steps. Throughout the workshop we aim to help you to understand Sensory Processing Disorder, how it can affect everyday life and introduce you to some strategies for success.
Sensory Processing Disorder (or SPD) is when the brain has difficulty receiving and responding to information that comes from the senses. SPD presents itself in so many different ways, however some of the most common characteristics that you may recognise are:
- Sensitivity to light, sound or touch
- Unusually low or high pain threshold
- Dislike of wearing certain types of clothing/materials
- Inability to sit and concentrate
- Excessive “meltdowns” or under/over reactions
A child displaying these kinds of behaviours may have difficulties in certain areas of everyday life.
At home these areas may include:
- Calming down or going to bed
- Brushing their teeth
- Meal times
- Getting dressed
At school the child may:
- Fall behind academically
- Be unable to make or sustain friendships
- Struggle with reading
- Have difficulty understanding and processing what is being asked of them.
Here at Future Steps Consultancy we are passionate about supporting our parents, carers and education professionals connected to the children we treat. We believe it is vital for you to understand your child’s diagnosis and treatment, how it will affect their everyday lives and for you to have strategies to help them succeed. So passionate in fact, that we are providing a complimentary workshop aimed at doing just that.
The workshop will be conducted by our managing director, Julie Davis. Julie has worked in health and the private sector for over 24 years. With Julie’s experience and expertise, we aim to help you understand Sensory Processing Disorder, recognise and understand the effects it can have on family life and introduce you to some of the strategies you need to succeed in caring for and/or educating a child with SPD.
Attending the workshop will improve your knowledge and confidence, as well as providing consistency for your child between their treatment at the Future Steps clinic and home and/or school.
This workshop is complimentary and is available to any parent, carer or education professional who is already, or has been connected to Future Steps in some way.
Workshops are run from 16:30 to 18:30 on the following dates:
-Wednesday 4th July 2018
